Calvert (KAL-vert), county ( 345 sq mi/894 sq km; 1990 pop. 51,372), S Md.; 38°32'N 76°32'W; Prince Frederick. Narrow tidewater peninsula bounded E by Chesapeake Bay, S and W by Patuxent R.; drained by many small creeks. Agr. area (tobacco, grain, truck, livestock); fisheries (oysters, crabs, fish); timber; some boat bldg. Resort area (fishing, hunting, and water sports, especially at Solomons, Broomes Isl., Chesapeake Beach). Nuclear power plants: Calvert Cliffs 1 (initial criticality Oct. 7, 1974) and Calvert Cliffs 2 (initial criticality Nov. 30, 1976) are 40 mi/64 km S of Annapolis; use cooling water from Chesapeake Bay and each has max. dependable capacity of 825 MWe. Named for the first Lord Baltimore and is the state's smallest county. Attractions include Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, Calvert Cliffs State Park, Calvert Marine Mus., Chesapeake Beach RR Mus., Cove Point Light Station, and Jefferson Patterson Park and Mus. Formed in 1650.
