, city (1991 pop. 92,772), S Ont., Can., on the Grand
R., NW of Hamilton; 43°23'N 80°19'W. It was formed in 1973 with the
amalgamation of Galt, Hespeler, and Preston, and parts of Waterloo and
North Dumfries townships. Galt was a Scot. settlement founded in 1817,
while Hespeler and Preston were founded in the early 1800s by
Mennonites from Pa. Cambridge is a heavily industrialized area with
mfg. (textiles, chemicals, wood prods., plastics). Hespeler was a
quarrying center and Preston had a well-known health resort.
