28 mi/45 km NE of Columbia, in the sandhills;
34°15'N 80°36'W. Popular winter resort established by northern
industrialists at the turn of the cent., known for polo, steeplechase
races, and hunting. Trade and processing center. Mfg. (apparel,
printing and publishing, lumber, medical supplies, fabricated metal
prods., concrete). In agr. (poultry, cattle; cotton, corn) and timber
area. Location of Kershaw co. fine arts center. In Revolutionary War
the battles of Camden (Aug. 16, 1780) and Hobkirks Hill (April 25,
1781) were fought nearby. City burned May 8, 1781, by evacuating
British. In Civil War it again was burned (Feb. 1865). Settled c. 1735,
inc. 1791.
