Largest parish in the state. In marshy coastal area, bounded W by
Sabine L. and Sabine R., S by Gulf of Mexico. Beach area along Gulf
referred to as the Cajun Riviera (incl. Holly Beach). Cattle, horses;
crawfish, oysters, shrimp, crabs, finfish (esp. menhaden), alligators;
fur trapping (nutria). Agr. (hay, rice, soybeans). Oil and natural gas
deposits. Navigable waterways include Calcasieu, Mermentau, Tau, and
Sabine rivers, and Intracoastal Waterway. Calcasieu L. at center, Grand
L. in E, and numerous other lakes in parish. Sabine Natl. Wildlife
Refuge crosses parish from Sabine L. E to E side of Calcasieu L.
Cameron Prairie and Lacassine Natl. Wildlife refuges in NE, part of
Rockefeller Natl. Wildlife Refuge in SE. Formed 1820.
