Fremont co., S central Colo., at the entrance of the Grand Canyon of
the Arkansas R. (see Royal Gorge),
35 mi/56 km WNW of Pueblo; 38°26'N
105°13'W. It is a health and tourist resort in a scenic area with
mineral springs. Marble and limestone are quarried, and a variety of
other minerals are found in the region. Mfg. (tools, cement, printing
and publishing, computer cable, pressed flowers, belt conveyors). Royal
Gorge suspension bridge to W. San Isable Natl. Forest to S. State
prison is here. Laid out 1859 on the site of a blockhouse built (1807)
by Zebulon M. Pike, inc. 1872.
