One of the nation's oldest beach resorts, it became popular in the
mid-19th cent., when it was known as the President's Playground;
Lincoln, Grant, Arthur, Buchanan, Hayes, and Benjamin Harrison
vacationed here. There are various mansions and Victorian hotels that
display 19th-cent. architecture. The city is connected by ferry to
Del., and a coast guard base is nearby. Settled in the 1600s, inc.
