Carlisle
(KAHR-lil), borough (1990 pop. 18,419),
Cumberland co., S Pa., 17 mi/27 km WSW of
Harrisburg, on Conodoguinet Creek; 40°12'N 77°12'W. Mfg.
(electronics; paper, rubber, wood, food, and leather prods.; lumber;
printing and publishing, machinery). In the last conflict (1754-1763)
of the Fr. and Indian Wars, the Forbes (1758) and the Bouquet (1763)
expeditions were organized here. A munitions depot during the
Revolution, Carlisle was hq. for George Washington during the Whiskey
Rebellion in 1794. Molly Pitcher is buried in the Old Graveyard. The
borough was a stop on the Underground RR and was attacked during the
Civil War by Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. Carlisle is the seat of the U.S. Army
War Col. and Dickinson Col. Carlisle Barracks military reservation to
E; Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center, Carlisle Fairgrounds, Co.
Historical Society; Kings Gap Environmental Education center to SW.
