76 mi/122 km SSE of Roswell, on the Pecos R.;
32°23'N 104°14'W. In a grazing and irrigated farm area. Elev.
3,550 ft/1,082 m. Terminus of RR spur to
potash mines. Mfg. (concrete prods., printing and publishing, potash
processing, steel fabrication, mining vehicles and equip., salt
processing). Potash and salt mines to E. Other industries include agr.,
ranching, and tourism. The climate is mild, and, on Pecos R., Avalon
Reservoir and Lake McMillan Reservoir, both to N, provide water
recreation. The Carlsbad reclamation project, begun in 1906, serves
more than 20,000 acres/8,094 ha. A 2-year branch of N.Mex.
State Univ. is located in Carlsbad. A state zoological and botanical
park is on the city's outskirts. Carlsbad Caverns National Park to SW; Living Desert State Park is here; Brantley L. State
Park to NW; Lincoln Natl. Forest, in Guadalupe Mts., to SW, include
Sitting Bull Falls. Settled 1888. Inc. 1918.
