Bounded NW by Monocacy R., N by Pa. state line; drained by branches of
Patapsco R. Piedmont region; dairying, stock and poultry raising; agr.
(corn, wheat, potatoes, vegetables, apples); stone quarries; some mfg.
(machinery, electronic equip.); lumbering. Formed in 1836. Takes its
name from Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the Declaration of
Independence. Birthplace of Francis Scott Key, composer of the Star
Spangled Banner. Western Md. Col., a private liberal-arts col. since
1867, is just NW of Westminster. Other points of interest are the farm
of Whittaker Chambers where he buried the Pumpkin Papers,
evidence in the trial of Alger Hiss; the Carroll County Farm Mus.;
Shriver Homestead (c.1797); Carroll County Courthouse (c.1838);
Shellman House (c.1807).; the Uniontown Historic District and Western
Md. RR Mus. Formed 1836.
