Carroll , county ( 992 sq mi/2,569 sq km; 1990 pop. 35,410), E N.H.; Ossipee; 43°52'N 71°13'W. Bounded E by Maine state line; SW by L. Winnipesaukee; Squam L. on W boundary. Agr. and recreational region; summer and winter resorts in L. Winnipesaukee area and White Mountains in S. Agr. in center and S (vegetables, nursery crops, corn, apples; cattle, hogs, poultry; dairying). Granite quarrying; some mfg. at Conway and Wolfeboro. Drained by Saco, Ellis, Bearcamp, and Ossipee rivers. Ossippe L. in E center; Squam L. in W; L. Wentworth in S, with Wentworth State Park on N shore; Ossippee Mts. in center; Pinkham Notch pass (2,032 ft/619 m) on N boundary; Crawford Notch pass (1,773 ft/540 m) and Crawford Notch State Park in extreme NW; Hemenway State Forest in center; part of White Mt. Natl. Forest in N and W; General John Wentworth State Historical Site in S; Several ski areas, especially in N; Pine River State Forest in SE; White Lake State Park in center; Echo Lake State Park in N. Formed 1840.
