Century Village
, name given to 4 retirement communities,
Broward and Palm Beach cos., SE Fla. During the 1970s and 1980s
communities were constructed at 4 separate locations: Deerfield Beach
and Pembroke Pines in Broward co., and West Palm Beach and Boca Raton
in Palm Beach co. Together these 4 communities contain housing for
54,00 residents, but vacancy rates steadily rose in the 1990s as the
migration of retirees into SE Fla. slowed. Successful marketing by the
developer, Cenvill Corp., created a nationwide demand for such
communities, not only in Fla., Ariz., and other Sunbelt states, but
also in the outer fringes of major metropolitan areas in the Northeast
and Midwest.
