Chandeleur Islands
(shan-duh-LUHR), SE La., crescent-shaped
archipelago (c.26 mi/42 km long) in the Gulf
of Mexico, c.40 mi/64 km N of mouth of the
Mississippi R., and 75 mi/121 km E of New
Orleans; 29°50'N 88°50'W. Mostly in St. Bernard parish, S part in
Plaquemines parish. Lighthouse at N end of chain (30°3'N 80°52'W).
Breton Natl. Wildlife Refuge here. Boat access. W of isls. is
Chandeleur Sound (c.20 mi/32 km wide), an arm
of the Gulf of Mexico, bet. marshy La. coast (W) and Chandeleur Isls.
(E). Adjoins Miss. Sound (N), Breton Sound (SW), numerous openings to
Gulf (E). Also called Islas de la Chandeleur.
