Chattahoochee River (chat-uh-HOO-chee), 436 mi/702 km long, Ga. and Fla.; rises in N Ga., near Helen; flows generally S to join the Flint R. in L. Seminole on the Ga.-Fla. state line; the combined waters form the Apalachicola R., c.90 mi/145 km long, which flows S, along the city of Atlanta, to Apalachicola Bay, NW Fla., and the Gulf of Mexico; 34°48'N 83°47'W. The Jim Woodruff Dam impounds L. Seminole and provides hydroelectricity. The Columbia, Walter F. George, Bartlett's Ferry, and Goat Rock dams produce power and regulate navigation on the lower Chattahoochee. Buford Dam forms L. Sidney Lanier (used for recreation) and is the source of Atlanta's water supply. The Flint R., 330 mi/531 km long, rising in W central Georgia, is navigable to Bainbridge, Ga., and is a valuable source of power in W Georgia.
