71°02'W. Its industries include printing and the mfg. of rubber,
plastics, electrical machines, shoes, chemicals, and consumer goods;
also dairy company hq. Oil storage tanks line Chelsea's docks, which
connect with the Atlantic by way of the Chelsea R. Large Cambodian
immigrant pop. From 1624 to 1739, Chelsea was part of Boston and was
called Winnisimmet. At the battle of Chelsea Creek (1775),
Revolutionary forces made one of their first captures of a Br. ship.
During the siege of Boston (1775-1776), part of Washington's army was
stationed in Chelsea. George Washington slept at the surviving
Cary-Bellingham House, built in 1659. Site of 2 conflagrations, 1908
and 1973. Settled 1624, inc. as a town 1739, as a city 1857.
