Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal
,
30 mi/48 km long, NE Ill., federally operated
navigable waterway and drainage canal, linking South Branch of Chicago
R. in Chicago with Des Plaines R. (locks) at Lockport; part of
Illinois Waterway; 22 ft/6.7 m deep,
162 ft/49 m-290 ft/88 m
wide; 41°42'N 87°56'W. Built 1892-1900; opened 1900 as Chicago
Drainage Canal, later improved and renamed. Carries the reversed flow
of Chicago R. (originally into L. Michigan), which disposes of city's
treated sewage; and replaces old Illinois and Michigan Canal, part of
whose course it parallels, as a shipping artery. Locks prevent the
river from entering the lake.
