Commercial and processing center of a vast area. Agr., livestock, and
mining are the economic mainstays of the surrounding region. The
revolutionist Hidalgo y Costilla was executed here in 1811. Occupied
briefly by U.S. forces in 1846 and served as the hq. of Benito
Juarez until Fr. troops took it in 1865. Has many U.S. residents.
There are several prime examples of 18th-cent. colonial architecture,
including the aqueduct. Airport.
