Clark , county ( 8,091 sq mi/20,956 sq km; 1990 pop. 741,459), SE Nev.; Las Vegas; 36°12'N 115°01'W. Mining and livestock-grazing area bordering on Ariz. (E) and Calif. (SW). Colorado R. forms Ariz. state line except in NE. Drained by Virgin R. in NE. Magnesium deposits; sand and gravel, lime, gypsum, silicon sand; some dairying; cattle; vegetables. Gambling and entertainment at center of co.'s economy. For 30 years among fastest growing cos. in U.S. Sheep Range in N. Highland Range central bighorn habitat area in S; Moapa R. Indian Reservation and Valley of Fire State Park in NE; part of Toiyabe Natl. Forest, including Spring Mts. and Mt. Charleston, in W; part of Desert Natl. Wildlife Range in NW, overlaps large tract of Nellis Air Force Bombing and Gunnery Range; Indian Springs Air Force Base in NW; Nellis Air Force Base in E, at North Las Vegas. L. Mead, created by Hoover Dam, is in E; L. Mead Natl. Recreation Area surrounds lakes Mead and Mohavy (Davis Dam) as Ariz state line. Ariz. state line is also Pacific/Mountain time zone boundary. Lowest point in Nev. (469 ft/143 m) on Colorado R. at S tip of co. Formed 1909.
