as Silver Bow Creek with joining of Basin and Blacktail creeks near
downtown Butte, Silver Bow co.; flows W then N; changes name in Deer
Lodge co., 7 mi/11.3 km E of downtown
Araconda; continues N past Deer Lodge, then NW past Missoula and
Thompson Falls, through Noxon and Cabinet Gorge reservoirs, and enters
panhandle region of N Idaho, where it flows
12 mi/19 km to E side of L. Pend Oreille at
village of Clark Fork. Segments of the Clark Fork were known by
different names in the past, prominently including the
Missoula R. Principal tributaries are the Blackfoot (enters from E,
5 mi/8 km to E of Missoula), Bitterroot, and
Flathead rivers. Sometimes defined to include Pend Oreille R., which
flows out of NW corner of Pend Oreille L. to Columbia R. Total length
of Pend Oreille R. and the Clark Fork is
479 mi/771 km; their drainage basins total
25,820 sq mi/66,874 sq km.
