Clearwater , river, c.75 mi/121 km long, Idaho (ID); formed by joining of South and Middle Forks at Kooskia, N Idaho co.; flows NW past Kaniah and Orofino, receives North Fork from NE, then flows W past Spalding to Snake R. at Lewinston. All but lower 5 mi/8 km within Nez Perce Indian Reservation. South Fork (c.65 mi/105 km long) rises in central Idaho co., N Idaho, flows W then N, joining Middle Forks at Kooskia to form Clearwater R. Middle Fork (c.25 mi/40 km long), formed at Lowell, N Idaho co., N Idaho, by joining of Selway and Lochsa rivers, flows W to join South Fork. North Fork rises in extreme SE Shoshone co., N Idaho, near Mont. border, flows SW into Clearwater co., then NW and again SW, passing through Dworshak Reservoir (54 mi/87 km long), impounded by Dworshak Dam only 5 mi/8 km NE of its confluence with Clearwater R. near Orofino. Dworshak Natl. Fish Hatchery near mouth. The gold-mining era in Idaho began in 1860, when gold was discovered and mining camps were set up on the river's South Fork.
