Coconino (ko-ko-NEE-no), county ( 18,662 sq mi/48,335 sq km; 1990 pop. 96,591), N Ariz.; Flagstaff; 35°50'N 111°46'W. Bounded by Utah on N, Mogollon Rim escarpment (runs E-W) on SE; Colorado R. forms part of NW boundary, and along with the Little Colorado R., also drains the area; Kaibab Creek forms part of NW boundary. Plateau and mesa area; highest elev. in Ariz. reached in San Francisco Peaks, at Humphrey Peak (12,643 ft/3,854 m), S center, N of Flagstaff. Includes part of Grand Canyon Natl. Park in N and NW; part of Painted Desert extends NE of Little Colorado R.; Wupatki, Sunset Crater, and Walnut Canyon natl. monuments are in S corner of the co., as are parts of Navajo and Hopi Indian reservations in NE. Lumber; sheep, cattle; hay. Formed 1891. Second largest co. in U.S in land area. Part of Glen Canyon Natl. Recreation Area, including Glen Canyon Dam, on Colorado R., in N; Havasupai Indian Reservation and part of Hualapai Indian Reservation in W; part of Kaibab Indian Reservation in NW corner; parts of Kaibab Natl. Forest in N, center, and S; Coconino Natl. Forest in S; parts of Prescott Natl. Forest on S boundary and Apache-Sitgreaves Natl. Forest in SE; Meteor Crater (Diablo Crater) in SE; parts of Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Area in N.
