, city (1990 pop. 23,714), Prince Georges co., W central Md., a
residential suburb of Wash., D.C.; 39°00'N 76°56'W. It is the seat
of the Univ. of Md., founded in 1856 as Md. Agr. Col. by Charles B.
Calvert, a descendant of the Lords Baltimore. All of the univ.'s 70
principal bldgs. are in Georgian-Colonial style. Also here is Md. Agr.
Experimental Station, est. 1887 as the first in the nation under
federal enabling law. The College Park Airport, which now services
light planes, is both the first airport built in the U.S. and the first
military air training field in the world. The Wright Brothers
established operations here after their first successful flight at
Kitty Hawk. The city's economy is centered around the university,
research institutions, electronics plants, and newspaper printing
plant. Settled 1745, inc. 1945.
