rising in Border co., in the Llano Estacado, NW Texas, from a
combination of intermittent streams from the NW, and flowing SE to
Matagorda Bay, an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico; drains
c.41,500 sq mi/107,485 sq km.
The source of numerous and frequent destructive floods brought about by
heavy Texas thunderstorms. As a result a series of flood control dams
have been built, which also provide energy for power plants and water
for irrigation. From its source, the Colorado flows through Lake J.B.
Thomas (Borden/Scurry cos.), E.V. Spence Reservoir (Coke
co.), Lake O.H. Ivie (Coleman, Runnels, Concho cos.), L. Buchanan, Inks
L., L. Marble Falls (Llano/Burnet cos.), and L. Travis and
L. Austin, as well as the city of Austin (Travis co). Major tributaries
include the Concho, Llano, and Pedernales rivers.
