Colorado River Aqueduct
, great water supply system for Los
Angeles basin, S Calif.; has its head at Parker Dam on the lower
Colorado. Main aqueduct (242 mi/389 km long),
with pumping stations raising water
1,600 ft/488 m, leads W, across Colorado
Desert and through San Jacinto Mts., to L. Mathews S of Riverside; San
Diego Aqueduct branches S from it,
c.25 mi/40 km ESE of Riverside; gravity then
carries flow through 150 mi/241 km of
distribution lines to cities of Los Angeles area. Constructed by
Metropolitan Water Dist. of S Calif. A major engineering achievement,
it was begun in 1932, and the aqueduct completed in 1939; 1st water
delivered to users in 1941.
