Tombigbee R. (Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway); 88°31'N 56°34'W. RR
junction and yards. It is the trade, processing, and shipping center of
a cotton, cattle, dairy, and timber area. Mfg. (wood and stone prods.,
paper prods., furniture, transportation equip., prefabricated bldgs.,
chemicals, medical equipment, agr. tools, printing and publishing);
marble and granite processing. Franklin Acad., the first free school in
the state, was opened in 1821. Seat of Miss. Univ. for Women; Columbus
