Coney Island
, swimming beach, amusement center, and
neighborhood of S Brooklyn borough of N.Y. city, SE N.Y., on the
Atlantic Ocean; 40°35'N 74°00'W. The tidal creek that once
separated the isl. from the mainland has been filled in, making the
area a peninsula. A seaside resort from the mid-19th cent., RR service
made it an extremely popular resort. Although it no longer has hotels,
its beach still attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors on hot
summer days. The beach stretches from Norton Point on Lower N.Y. Bay E
almost 4.5 mi/7.2 km to the residential
communities of Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach S of Sheepshead Bay.
The 2-mi/3.2-km boardwalk, the N.Y. Aquarium, and the many
notable eating places are other attractions. Most of its pop. is
Afr.-Amer. and Hispanic; many residents are poor and elderly. High-rise
apartments (many fallen into decay) have replaced much of amusement
area since 1950s. Although it remains popular, Coney Isl. has declined
considerably since its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s.
