Conowingo Dam
, 4,648 ft/1,417 m long,
102 ft/31 m high, on the Susquehanna R., Cecil
Co., NE Md. Completed in 1928, the dam created the
14-mi/23-km long Conowingo L., and covered the old crossing
at Bald Friar Lafayette, used by Lafayette, the Comte de Rochambeau,
and their troops on their way to Yorktown in 1781. It is one of the
largest non-Federal hydroelectric power plants in the U.S. A platform
extending the entire length of the powerhouse accomodates shad
fishermen. The dam forms a reservoir with a max. capacity of 310,000
acre-feet. Electric power here flows to the Pa. Power Company's
station near Philadelphia. The name comes from the Indian word meaning
at the rapids.
