co., extreme NE Miss., 85 mi/137 km ESE of
Memphis, Tenn., near the Tenn. state line; 34°56'N 88°31'W. RR
junction. In an agr. area (cotton, corn, soybeans; cattle, hogs); mfg.
(construction materials; machinery; furniture; apparel; transportation
equip.; prepared foods;, wood, vinyl, and paper prods.; meat
processing; consumer prods.). During the Civil War, Corinth was a
strategic RR center, abandoned to Gen. H. W. Halleck's Union Army in
May 1862, after the battle of Shiloh. General Rosecrans repulsed the
Confederates under generals Earl Van Doren and Sterling Price in heavy
fighting here, Oct. 3-4, 1862. Corinth Natl. Cemetery (est. 1866) has
6,000 graves. NE Miss. Mus.; Basttery Rubinette Civil War battle
site. Founded c.1855.
