In a dairy and vineyard region. The glass industry, for which the city
is famous, began in 1868. Corning, Inc. (formerly Corning Glass) has
hq. here. Corning glass prods. are used in advanced technology
industries, such as fiber optics. The Corning glass mus. is a major
tourist attraction. Corning Community Col. and the Rockwell Mus., the
largest collection of Western art in the E U.S. and the world's
largest collection of Steuben glass, are located in the city, and a
number of state parks are in the area. In 1972 the city was heavily
damaged by flooding in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. Settled 1788; inc.
as a city 1890.
