, city (1990 pop. 43,264), Kenton co., N central
Ky., suburb 2 mi/3.2 km S of Cincinnati
(Ohio), on the Ohio R. (opposite Cincinnati; bridged), at mouth of
Licking R.; 39°02'N 84°30'W. The 4th-largest city in Ky. Mfg.
(consumer goods, metal prods., automotive parts, sheet metal
fabrication, lumber, paper and plastic prods., food processing,
printing and publishing, machinery). Among its points of interest are
the Roebling Suspension Bridge to Cincinnati (designed by J. A.
Roebling, it was the prototype of his design of the Brooklyn Bridge in
N.Y. city); Devou Park, with Behringer-Crawford Mus. (focusing on
natural and cultural history); Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption;
the tiny Monte Casino chapel; the Garden of Hope; the Carnegie Art
Center; and the Carneal House (1815). Main Strasse village theme park
in W; Covington landing entertainment area, with Star of Cincinnati
cruise boat. Frank Duveneck was born in Covington, and the city has a
mus. devoted to his paintings. The artist and naturalist Daniel Carter
Beard was also born (and lived) in Covington. Thomas More Col.
(formerly Villa Madonna Col.) is to SW in Crestview Hills.
