Culebra Island
(koo-LAI-brah) (
11 sq mi/28 sq km; 1990 pop.
1,542), belonging to P.R., 20 mi/32 km E of
the main isl., 50 mi/80 km ESE of San Juan;
c.7 mi/11.3 km long,
2 mi/3.2 km wide. Rises to
650 ft/198 m. An almost barren volcanic isl.,
lacking in water; some coconut groves. Has good harbor. Tourism. Main
town is Dewey, formerly called Culebra. Lighthouse on E end. Reached by
plane from San Juan and Fajardo and by ferry from Fajardo. Culebra
Natl. Wildlife Reserve ( c.1,480 acres/599 ha),
comprised of 23 offshore isls. and 4 tracts of Culebra land.
Has large seabird colony. U.S.Naval Reservation on isl.
