Ga., largest island off Georgia located bet. Jekyll Isl. to
the N and the Ga.-Fla. state line to the S; 30°52'N 81°30'W. Once
privately owned, this natl. seashore is a preserve for wild horses,
birds, deer, and alligators. Protected breeding area for loggerhead
turtles. Accessible only by boat, the isl. is a pristine example of
beaches, sand dunes, marshes, and lakes as they were before the
discovery of the New World. Authorized 1972. Access from St. Mary's,
Ga.
