long, rising in E Ky., in SE letcher co. Flows generally WSW past
Harlan and Williamsburg, receives Laurel R. from E (Laurel River L.
reservoir immediately upstream); flows through L. Cumberland reservoir
(Wolf Creek Dam), and past Burkesville, enters Tenn., and turns W as it
flows thrugh Condell Hull L. reservoir., continues through Old Hickory
L. reservoir and city of Nashville, then turns NW and flows through
Cheatham L. reservoir, past Clarksville and Dover, reenters Ky. as it
flows through L. Barkley reservoir (past Eddyville, Ky.), passes
through Barkley Dam 26 mi/42 km above
its confluence with Ohio R. at Smithland,
12 mi/19 km upstream (ENE) of mouth of
Tennessee R. Neck of land bet. L. Barkley and Kentucky L. (Kenlake), on
Tennessee R., to W, known as Land Between the Lakes
(40 mi/64 km long;
7 mi/11.3 km wide), a recreation area managed
by the TVA, short channel connects 2 lakes just above Barkley and
Kentucky dams. The river is navigable for small craft for much of its
length. The TVA markets hydroelectric power produced by the dams on the
Cumberland and Tennessee rivers and their tributaries. The Cumberland
valley was the scene of several important Civil War battles in
1860s.
