Dearborn , city (1990 pop. 89,286), Wayne co., SE Mich., suburb, 6 mi/9.7 km W of downtown Detroit, borders city of Detroit on E and N; 42°18'N 83°12'W. Drained by R. Rouge and Lower R. Rouge; parkways on both rivers. The city's economy is principally tied to the automobile industry. Mfg. (plastic prods., fabricated-metal prods., apparel, chemicals, electronic equip., printing and publishing, food). Automotive research and development are also important. Largely residential despite its industry, Dearborn is famous for the Edison Institute of Technology, which includes Greenfield Village, the birthplace of Henry Ford. Ford's large estate, Fair Lane, is a natl. historic landmark and has become part of the Univ. of Michigan's Dearborn campus. Site of Fairlane Town Center, one of the largest shopping centers in the U.S. Two museums and Henry Ford Community Col. and Detroit Col. of Business are in the city. Settled 1795, consolidated with the city of Fordson in 1928, inc. as a city 1929.
