Del Norte , county ( 1,008 sq mi/2,611 sq km; 1990 pop. 23,460), NW Calif.; Crescent City; 41°45'N 123°58'W. Bounded N by Oregon state line, W by Pacific Ocean; mountainous (Siskiyou and Klamath mts.), except for narrow coastal strip. Drained by Smith R. (NW), Klamath R. (SW). Includes part of Six Rivers Natl. Forest in all but coastal strip in W. Site of Smith R., Crescent City, and Lower Klamath Indian reservations. Redwood trees are preserved in Jedidiah Smith Redwoods and Del Norte Coast redwoods state parks in W center. Lumbering and sawmilling (especially redwood); timber; dairying; cattle; grapes, apples, asparagus, tomatoes, walnuts; nursery stock; mining (silver, gold), quarrying (sand and gravel). Ocean fisheries (salmon, halibut, sole, crabs). Game fishing (salmon, steelhead, trout) and hunting attract vacationers. Processing industries (lumber, fish, dairy prods.). Pelican State Beach in NW corner; part of Redwood Natl. Park in W and SW, along coast. Formed 1857.
