(de-NAH-lee), park (7,370 sq mi/19,088 sq km), preserve (2,049 sq mi/5,037 sq km) in the Alaska Range, S central Alaska.
Located in a region of spectacular mt. scenery, the park contains Mt.
McKinley (Denali), the highest point in N. Amer.
(20,320 ft/6,194 m). Many peaks exceed
10,000 ft/3,048 m. The park includes glaciers,
tundra, and abundant wildlife (moose, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, and
wolves). Major tourist destination; numerous hotels near entrance to
park. Name changed and park expanded 1980. Also, 2,969 sq mi/7,689 sq km designated as wilderness; designated
Biosphere Reserve 1976. Estab. 1917 as Mt. McKinley Natl. Park; Denali
Natl. Monument est. 1978.
