Ariz., at the Mexican (Sonora) border; elev. 3,990
ft/1,216 m; 31°20'N 109°31'W. The mining and
smelting of copper have been important since 1900; the city grew
around a copper smelter which has since been abandoned and largely
dismantled. Douglas is also a ranching center and a border station,
with mfg. (transformers, wiring devices, electronic components,
apparel). Gypsum and tungsten mines and limestone quarries in the area.
RR terminus transfer point to Mex. rail system. The city has Cochise
col. (2-year) as well as an internatl. airport. Its sister city is Agua
Prieta, Mexico. San Bernadino Natl. Wildlife Refuge to E; part of
Coronado Natl. Forest to NE. Inc. 1905.
