Dover , city (1990 pop. 25,042), Strafford co., SE N.H., 32 mi/51 km ENE of Manchester, and 8 mi/12.9 km SSE of Rochester; bounded E and drained by Cocheco R., bounded SE by Piscataqua R. (tidal; Maine state boundary), SW in part by Bellamy R; 43°11'N 70°52'W. The 30 ft/9 m falls of the Cocheco R. here have powered industry since the late 1700s. Mfg. (electrical equip., plastic fabricating, shoes, business equip., printing and publishing, tool and die); insurance. Regarded by some as the first permanent settlement in N.H., Lord Saye and Sele and his group had large holdings here (1633-41). A massacre by Native Americans occurred in 1689. In 1812 the first cotton factory was established and the town thrived as a textile center. Attractions include the garrison house (late 1600s); the Hale house (1806), where Lafayette and James Monroe stayed; and a library organized in 1792. Seat of McIntosh Col. Woodman Inst. is here. Covered bridges in N. Settled 1623, inc. as a city 1855.
