East Village
, section of borough of Manhattan, N.Y. city, SE
N.Y. Bounded on N by E. 14th St., on S by Houston St., by the Bowery
(4th Ave.) on the W, and on the E by the East R., this is one of the
older parts of N.Y. city and a neighborhood that is as familiar, at
least in name, to non-New Yorkers as it is to residents. Characterized
by the bohemian lifestyle, replete with often-struggling artists,
writers, and students. A section that was formerly Pol. and Ukr. began
losing its ethnic flavor in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming first a
bastion of hippies, then punks; in more recent years, it has been
altered and gentrified. The Cooper Union Foundation Bldg. is named
after Peter Cooper, its founder and benefactor, who helped develop
telegraph technology. Other significant historic figures connected with
the East Village include Jacob Riis, Peter Stuyvesant, and John Jacob
Astor.
