8 mi/12.9 km ENE of Bethlehem, on Delaware R.,
opposite (W of) Phillipsburg, N.J., at mouth of Lehigh R.; 40°41'N
75°13'W. Easton is a part of the industrial Lehigh Valley. Rail
junction. The surrounding area has limestone. Mfg. (crushed stone, food
prods., apparel, printing and publishing, wood prods., electrical
equip., fabricated metal prods., textiles, writing implements,
insulation). Native American peace conferences held here in 1756 and
1761, and Easton served as an outpost during the Amer. Revolution.
Lafayette Col., the First United Church of Christ (1776), and the
restored house (1757) of George Taylor, a signer of the Declaration of
Independence, are in Easton. Easton Airport to N. Canal Mus. and
restored sect. of Lehigh Canal mark the city's canal days, and a park
lies along the banks of the old Lehigh Canal. Bushkill Park theme park
to NW; Kressler Memorial Colonial Gardens; Jack Nicholas House
(c.1807); Illick Historical Library; County Historical Society. Founded
1751 by Thomas Penn, inc. as a city 1886.
