, city (1990 pop. 14,292), Pasquotank
co., NE N.C., 40 mi/64 km SSE of Portsmouth,
Va., and c.100 mi/161 km ENE of Rocky Mount at
head of Pasquotank R. estuary; 36°17'N 76°13'W. Intracoastal
Waterway passes through estuary N to Dismal Swamp Canal to Portsmouth,
Va. It is the largest city in the Albemarle Sound area. Shipyards. The
city is also a trade and shipping center for the region's diversified
farm prods. Mfg. (printing and publishing, lumber, industrial equip.,
wooden cabinets, flow meters, crab meat processing, paper boxes, cotton
yarn, horticultural growing media, aerostats). The area was first
visited (1584) and mapped by a scouting expedition from Roanoke Isl.
The first Gen. Assembly of Carolina met there in 1665. In the Civil
War, Elizabeth City was occupied (1862) by Federal troops and burned.
It is the seat of Elizabeth City State Univ. and the Col. of the
Albemarle (2-year). Mus. of Albermarle here. A large U.S. Coast Guard
air station is NE. Dismal Swamp Natl. Wildlife Refuge to NW. Elizabeth
City Municipal Airport to SE. Settled mid-1600s, inc. 1793.
