Carter co., NE Tenn., on the Watauga R.,
8 mi/13 km E of Johnson City; 36C°20'N
82°15'W. An industrial center where rayon and other synthetics,
clothing, boxes, crushed stone, and hand tools are produced. Agr.
includes tobacco, fruit, and Christmas trees. The region was one of the
earliest settled in Tennessee. In 1772 the Watauga Assn. was organized
there; Sycamore Shoals Monument commemorates this event, the treaty
Richard Henderson made with the Cherokee in 1775, and the formation of
a Revolutionary force that later took part in the battle of Kings
Mountain. Nearby lakes have Tennessee Valley Authority dams, and the
area was developed for recreational use. Inc. 1799.
