Elk Hills Reserve , huge oil reserve near Bakersfield, Calif. that played a major role in the Teapot Dome scandal during the Harding Administration. The U.S. govt. acquired 78% of the reserve in the 1960s as the “Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve,” and large-scale oil production was accomplished by the introduction of new techniques after the energy crisis of 1973-1974. The govt. interest was sold to a private company in 1997. Natural gas also produced.
