Emporia (em-POR-ee-uh), city (1990 pop. 25,512), Lyon co., E central Kansas, in the Flint Hills bet. the Neosho and Cottonwood rivers, 50 mi/80 km SW of Topeka on Kansas Turnpike; 38°24'N 96°11'W. Elev. 1,150 ft/351 m. Commercial and shipping (RR and highway) center for a large cattle and grain area. Mfg. (soybean oil, engines, printing machinery, baked goods, meat prods., vehicular lighting equipment, pet foods, fabricated metal prod., ceramic insulation, valves, hose fittings). Emporia State Univ. in the city. William Allen White (locally renowed editor) made the small-town Emporia Gazette a nationally known newspaper. William Allen White home and sculpture park here. Lyon State Fishing L. to NE. Inc. 1857.
