, city (1990 pop. 74,111), seat of Cass co., E N.Dak., on
the Red R., opposite Moorhead, Minn; 46°52'N 96°49'W. A RR hub, RR
junction, regional airport, and regional finance center, and regional
medical center, Fargo is also the trade and distribution center of a
spring-wheat and livestock region. Mfg. (computer software, farm tools,
agr. prods., transportation equip.). The city was founded (1871) with
the coming of the Northern Pacific RR and named for William G. Fargo of
the Wells-Fargo Express Company. In the city are N.Dak. State Univ. and
historical mus. The nearby suburb of West Fargo has minor stockyards
