drained by Youghiogheny R. (forms Youghiogheny River L. reservoir on SE
boundary). Agr. (corn, wheat, oats, barley, hay, alfalfa, apples;
sheep, hogs, cattle, dairying); timber. Bituminous coal; natural gas;
limestone. Mfg. at Uniontown and Connellsville. First settled 1752 by
Virginians. Whiskey Rebellion put down here in 1794. Friendship Hill
Natl. Historic Site in SW; Fort Necessity Natl. Battlefield in S
center; historic Cumberland Road passed through co. Chestnut Ridge
crosses center of co. NE-SW; part of Laurel Ridge State Park in NE;
large Ohiopyle State Park in E; Forbes State Forest in several small
sects. in S, including Que. Run Wilderness Area; part of Cheat L.
