Flagstaff , city (1990 pop. 45,857), Coconino co., N Ariz., 120 mi/193 km NNE of Phoenix, near the San Francisco Peaks; 35°11'N 111°37'W. Elev. 6,905 ft/2,105 m. City is bounded on all sides by Coconino Natl. Forest; part of Kaibab Natl. Forest to W. Lumbering, ranching, and a lively tourism thrive in the region; fish hatchery to SW. Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. Flagstaff Municipal Airport (Pulliam Field) in SW. Flagstaff also has facilities for astronomy, such as the Lowell observatory at Mars Hill, in W part of city, Riordan State Historic Park. The Mus. of Northern Ariz., Pioneer History Mus., and Northern Ariz. Univ. are in the city. Flagstaff Aboretum to S. Walnut Canyon Natl. Monument is E of city; San Francisco Mts. to N, including Ariz. Snow Bowl ski area and Humphreys Peak (12,643 ft/3,854 m), the highest point in Ariz.; Mormon L. to SE; Sunset Crater and Wupatki Natl. Monuments to NE; Slide Rock State Park to S. Inc. 1894.
