Flaming Gorge Reservoir

Canyon of the Green R., in Flaming Gorge Natl. Recreation Area,
30 mi/48 km N of Vernal (Utah);
c.80 mi/129 km long, max.
4 mi/6.4 km wide; 40°55'N 109°31'W. In
Wyo., Blacks Fork R. forms 15-mi/24-km NW arm and Henrys
Fork enters from W, forming 8-mi/12.9-km arm. Widest point
26 mi/42 km WNW of dam. Formed by Flaming
Gorge Dam, built (1958-1963) by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation as a
major unit in the Colorado R. storage project for water storage and
hydroelectricity. Canyon named in 1869 by the U.S. explorer John
Wesley Powell because the brilliant red gorge, from a distance, looked
as if it were on fire. Ashley Natl. Forest and foothills of Uinta
Mts. on S.
