Flathead Lake

Flathead cos., NW Mont.; 28 mi/45 km long.
Largest natural lake in Mont. Formed by glacial scouring and moraine
damming of the Flathead R., which flows through it from N to S.
Flathead L. has an irregular shoreline and many small isls. S
½ of lake in Flathead Indian Reservation, town of
Polson at S end, city of Kalispell
9 mi/14.5 km NW of N end, 6 units of Flathead
L. State Park scattered about lake shore, Swan R. at NE end. RR termini
at both ends of lake, transfer of goods across lake. Surrounded by
mts., the lake is a noted recreation area. Kerr Dam,
4 mi/6.4 km downstream from S end, provides
hydroelectric power and water for irrigation.
