long, Ga.; rises in upper Piedmont in W central Ga., just S of Atlanta;
flows S to the SE corner of the state; 33°39'N 84°25'W. Major flood
in Albany, Ga., in 1994 when the river crested at
43 ft/13 m and 23,000 residents were
evacuated. Historically, the head of navigation was Bainbridge. At the
confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers, at the Fla.-Ala.
border, the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam creates L. Seminole. To
the S the river is called the Apalachicola.
