Fort Frederica
(fred-uh-REEK-uh), natl. monument, SE Ga., on
St. Simons Isl.; 31°13'N 81°23'W. It is the ruins of a fort built
by James Oglethorpe in 1736 to guard the Eng. colony's S frontier from
the Span.-held Florida. The fort's layout has been restored and the
tabby walls are partially preserved. (Tabby is a cement-like mixture of
lime, sand, and oyster shells used in coastal S.C. and Ga.) Soldiers
from Fort Frederica successfully defended the English-held lands at the
Battle of Bloody Marsh. Authorized 1936.
